LAS VEGAS, April 13, 2008 (NAB2008, Booth N2502) — Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, has been awarded a contract for the build-out of the Egyptian Radio & Television Union's (ERTU) standard-definition/high-definition (SD/HD) news operations in Cairo, Egypt. Harris will provide a range of equipment from its broadcast product portfolio, including the NEXIO XS video server platform and Velocity NX full-featured SD/HD promotions craft editors. As the state broadcaster for Egypt, ERTU provides the news programming for terrestrial and satellite channels serving the country. The sale was handled by Egyptian dealer Integrated Systems. "ERTU is an existing user of Harris servers in the newsroom environment, so it was the natural choice to select this leading server technology from Harris to formulate part of our transition to HD," said Hamdy Mounir, vice chairman for projects, engineering sector, Egyptian Radio and Television Union. "We were also keen to work with an organisation that enabled close integration between its servers and other vendors' automation solutions, and it was the high level of interoperability that the Harris servers provided that sealed this decision." As turnaround of material is extremely important in time-critical environments such as news, the fast throughput of material through the NEXIO XS servers allows both high- and low-resolution non-linear editors to start working as material is being ingested. Journalists can simultaneously browse and edit low-resolution content at their desktops and send the material to playout. At ERTU, the NEXIO XS servers seamlessly integrate with the AP ENPS® newsroom computer system, and playout is handled by Omnibus automation. Designed on a software-based codec model, the NEXIO XS server platform enables back-to-back playout of multiple formats on every channel and is able to encompass new codecs the moment they become available. It provides an extensive range of I/O types, integrated applications support and encode options, including long-GOP MPEG-2 at SD and HD resolutions, DV25, DV50 and IMX. Integrated into the NEXIO storage area network (SAN), Velocity NX enables editing of native HD and SD content (both 720p and 1080i) directly from the NEXIO shared storage architecture. Harris Broadcast Communications offers products, systems and services that provide interoperable workflow solutions that span the entire broadcast delivery chain. The Harris ONE approach brings together highly integrated and cost-effective products that are ideal for emerging media business models and for customers upgrading media operations to digital and high-definition services.
