Harris Corporation Introduces Maxiva™ Family of Air-Cooled Transmitters for Low-Power UHF Applications

New Transmitter Design Uses Harris® PowerSmart™ Architecture for the Industry's Most Compact and Efficient Low-Power UHF Transmitters

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, September 11, 2008, (IBC2008, Stand 7.G20) — Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, introduces the Harris® Maxiva™ UAX series of air-cooled, solid-state transmitters for low-power UHF transmission. Featuring Harris PowerSmart™ technology for excellent efficiency and a compact footprint, Maxiva UAX air-cooled transmitters offer the industry's most robust and scalable low-power UHF solutions for analog and digital broadcasting. Harris will showcase the Maxiva UAX transmitter series in analog and DVB-T modulation schemes at the 2008 International Broadcasting Convention (IBC).

The Maxiva UAX range of air-cooled transmitters was designed specifically for broadcasters that require a cost- and space-efficient solution for low-power transmission. Available in power levels from 10 watts to 2 kW, Maxiva UAX transmitters are ideal for low-power applications from full-market coverage to gap filler applications. The PowerSmart architecture for solid-state transmitters enables high power-density, compact foot print and high efficiency to give broadcasters the lowest cost of ownership. The architecture utilizes fewer parts in the cabinet to provide simple field repairability and "green" energy-efficient operation.

All Maxiva UAX transmitters are capable of multiple modulation schemes and adapt to analog and digital standards worldwide, and come standard with Harris Apex™ exciter technology. Analog broadcasters can easily convert to digital in the field via a simple software update, ideal for customers planning a transition to ATSC, DVB-T, DVB-H, DVB-T2, or other digital standards. DTV broadcasters using the Apex exciter technology in Maxiva UAX transmitters can provide high-quality, multi-program transmission, including high-definition, standard-definition and mobile television content.

"Broadcasters globally are faced with the unique challenge of providing clear, high-quality over-the-air transmissions to a specific area or region, often with a limited budget," said Tim Thorsteinson, president of Harris Broadcast Communications. "As more broadcasters transition to digital, the need for multimedia-capable yet cost-efficient low-power transmission platforms becomes greater. The new Harris solid-state architecture is ideal for broadcasters that require a compact, affordable, low-power solution that retains the reliability and robustness needed to reach every consumer."

Apex exciter technology is a significant component in the PowerSmart architecture, a groundbreaking design philosophy that significantly raises the transmitter value proposition for terrestrial broadcasters. In addition to Apex exciter technology, the PowerSmart architecture in Maxiva UAX air-cooled transmitters includes a new 50-volt LDMOS device from Freescale Semiconductor, which provides the high power density within the transmitter.

Maxiva UAX transmitters also feature an integrated, central control system within the unit for optimal monitoring and control. A front panel screen provides an overview of all operational parameters for maintenance procedures and performance checks. The control system can also be accessed from anywhere in the world via a TCP/IP network connection for remote monitoring.

The air-cooled design further enhances the value proposition for broadcasters, integrating a straightforward air cooling system into the cabinet that provides filtered, cool air through the transmitter to keep the transmitter operating reliably and at optimum performance. The air-cooled design eliminates the associated costs of pump modules and heat exchanges, giving low-power UHF broadcasters a truly compact, cost-efficient yet highly robust solution for analog and digital multimedia transmission.

Harris Broadcast Communications offers products, systems and services that provide interoperable workflow solutions that span the entire media delivery chain. The Harris ONE™ solution brings together highly integrated and cost-effective products that are ideal for emerging media business models and for customers upgrading media operations to digital and high-definition services.
